Children’s Picture Book Sight Words

A child’s transition from oral language to print-based literacy is a primary outcome of early education. Research into how teachers might optimize the transition has, unsurprisingly, been at the core of over a century of research. Existing sight word resources available to teachers are extremely outdated and/or methodologically unsound. The Children’s Picture Book Sight Words (CPB SIGHT WORDS) list has been generated based on a thorough analysis of data representing children’s picture books and contributes a valuable pedagogical resource for initial reading instruction. The CPB SIGHT WORDS derive from 2146 children’s picture books, the largest corpus yet developed of these texts. The resource contains the most prevalent 1000 words in picture books.
